Emerson House Learning is looking to recruit part-time teachers for both
online and in person tutoring support.

Teachers interested in online teaching could be living outside the Charlottesville area.

We are looking for three types of teacher:

Specialist math teachers

The Emerson House math program has remained at the forefront of research and best practice for more than 25 years, see our Programs page for further details. At Emerson House, we understand that dyslexia, dyspraxia (developmental coordination disorder), as well as dyscalculia (a Specific Learning Difficulty in math), can have an impact on mathematical development. Our program is specifically designed to address these challenges and individualized for each student.

Becoming a specialist math teacher at Emerson House Learning provides the valuable opportunity to receive in-house training in our math program.

Specialist math teachers teach math in a 2-1 and 1-1 setting. They need to be experienced teachers with an interest in Specific Learning Disabilities.

Specialist literacy teachers

At Emerson House, we provide an individualized literacy program for each child, using the principles of systematic, multi-sensory, and phonics-based teaching. See our Programs page for further details.

Specialist literacy teachers teach in a 2-1 and 1-1 setting. They may have a background in classroom teaching, speech therapy, or other relevant area.

Specialist literacy teachers need to be qualified and experienced in teaching students with Specific Learning Disabilities such as dyslexia. For example, those with Wilson or Orton Gillingham training. CERI certification is desirable, but not necessary.

Emerson House Learning will provide in house training in our literacy framework.

Assistant teachers

At Emerson House we incorporate a multi-sensory touch-typing course into our literacy program and offer after-school typing clubs as there are many benefits for students who are struggling with literacy. See our Programs page for details.

Assistant teachers help teach the touch-typing program in small groups. They do not need to be fully qualified teachers but need experience in teaching and interest in Specific Learning Difficulties such as dyslexia.

In house training will be provided. Being an assistant teacher can provide valuable experience for student teachers and those looking for teaching experience.
Teaching hours are flexible (after school and during school time). Teachers are paid an hourly rate for teaching.
