What students and parents are saying about EHL

"Our daughter’s progress this year has been incredible - more progress in the past year than her first several years of school combined. We are so thrilled with where she is entering 5th grade."

My daughter loved the first day! She kept saying how "fun" it was!

My daughter just said you are the math teacher of her dreams Bronwyn, and it brought tears to my eyes because math has been such a hard place for her for such a long time. Thank you SO much for whatever magic just happened!

"My daughter is changed because of the time spent learning at Emerson House. Not only did she learn math, she also learned about herself and how to advocate for her unique needs. I will forever be grateful."

Emerson House changed the trajectory of my daughter's future. Paula Bishop-Liebler took the time to understand my daughter's complex and unique learning profile. When my daughter began her individual sessions, she could not regularly add or subtract. Now, three years later, she is successfully performing algebra at the high school level (while taking a full course load). However, the biggest win for our family was what Paula taught us about the way our child sees the world. My daughter is changed because of the time spent learning at Emerson House. Not only did she learn math, she also learned about herself and how to advocate for her unique needs. I will forever be grateful.

"It is so rare to find someone who truly understands dyscalculia and other learning differences but it's not just their expertise that makes them so wonderful ..."

Paula and the Emerson House Learning team have been a fabulous resource for our family. It is so rare to find someone who truly understands dyscalculia and other learning differences but it's not just their expertise that makes them so wonderful.

Paula has a warm and gentle way about her.  Her personality and calm and nurturing demeanor help encourage my daughter to push through learning challenges.  Paula is great at providing her encouragement and positive reinforcement throughout each lesson so she's equally focused on increasing confidence as well as math skills. The Emerson House techniques are unique and thorough, utilizing a multi-sensory approach even during virtual learning.

In addition to all of that, Paula truly is vested in the well being and success of each child.  She frequently updates parents on her class observations and student progress and has even given up time on the weekends and nights to answer questions and have conversations.  She is incredibly accommodating, adjusting her personal schedule to help ensure each student can get the support they need.

The other teachers Paula has brought on board also share the same passion for their students.  The literacy and typing teachers are energetic and take a personal interest in each child.  They keep the lessons fun and engaging.  I can't say enough about Emerson House... my daughter has developed a stronger understanding of math and literacy and has gained a tremendous amount of confidence from working with the Emerson House team.

"If your child is struggling to learn, don't hesitate! Emerson House has the background, the experience, and the approach any child would benefit from learning!"

Paula Bishop-Liebler is an extraordinary addition to our Charlottesville community. For the first time, I feel I am working with a human being who gets my child. Rather than talking down to my special needs daughter, she slows down, breaks things down, and explains the how and why of numbers.

My child has had 5 different math tutors since the 2nd grade. She has received special education support for math since she was in the first grade. Nothing seemed to stick. Every time she faced material that she had "mastered" before, she got confused - what is this? How does this work? She could not remember the many procedures and struggled to keep up with her classmates.

After working with Emerson House for 6 months, she has begun to calculate numbers in her head! She sees connections between numbers (such as "my brother is six years old, just like that other child, so they must be born in the same year—2014"). While this logic may seem obvious to adults, these were the kinds of issues she struggled with—making connections, seeing relationships, understanding how numbers worked. Besides that, the games and lessons are fun! Honestly, even I have learned more about math!

If your child is struggling to learn, don't hesitate! Emerson House has the background, the experience, and the approach any child would benefit from learning!

"it makes my heart sing to hear them laughing together as they solve math problems and play word games"

Our 8 year old has been really struggling with reading and math in school and her teacher suggested we have her evaluated. It has been a long process trying to figure out what she needs. When Paula talked to us about the Emerson House programs, we were excited about giving it a try.

Paula is a wonderful teacher, patient, funny and really keeps my daughter engaged and excited about learning. She enjoys playing the math and reading games at home and it makes my heart sing to hear them laughing together as they solve math problems and play word games.

I really feel like Paula has been able to reach my kid in a way that is helping her build confidence in herself. A good teacher can do that. My daughter's grade school teacher is seeing improvements in her work at school and her confidence in finishing her work on time.

Paula is a fantastic teacher and advocate and I highly recommend her.
